Baby is third child to die from alleged attack by midwife mom Lindsay Clancy

The baby, who was strangled by his mother along with his brother and sister, died three days after his brothers and sisters.

Lindsey Clancy, 32, is accused of killing her daughter Cora, 5, son Dawson, 3, and now eight-month-old baby Callan, in the family’s Massachusetts home.

The Plymouth County District Attorney confirmed that Callan died at a hospital in the Boston area on Friday morning. Clancy is being treated in a hospital in police custody and is expected to face trial on murder charges when she is released.

Clancy and Callan initially survived an apparent murder-suicide attempt – a mother-of-three jumped out of a window on the top floor of the house.

Her terrified husband, Patrick, 34, found Clancy unconscious outside their home around 6 p.m. Tuesday and called 911. He “popped out for 25 minutes” to pick up a takeout order.

Investigators are looking into whether the midwife suffered from postpartum psychosis as she was on leave from work at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Friends of the Clancy family created GoFundMe to support Patrick and help pay medical bills, funeral bills, and legal bills.

$438,224 of a $700,000 target has been raised so far, and the page adds, “This help is especially needed because Pat will be unable to work for the foreseeable future as he goes through this painful, life-changing tragedy.”

“We all know Pat as the kindest and most sincere person. As someone who is always ready to support others, we sincerely thank you for offering yours.”

A vigil was held Thursday evening at Sagrada Familia in Duxbury and the priest said the mother was “trying to cope with her mental illness” before she became “depressed”.

Officers arrived at the family home on Tuesday after a distraught Patrick found his wife unconscious on the ground under a second-story window.

They found three small children “unconscious” upstairs “with clear signs of trauma”.

Plymouth District Attorney Timothy Cruz said they were all strangled.

Cora and Dawson were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital, and Callan was given CPR at the scene.

Clancy will stand trial on charges including two counts of murder and three counts of strangulation and assault, as well as battery with a deadly weapon, for the deaths of her two children.

Additional charges are expected to be added in connection with Callan’s death.

Cruz said they will now perform autopsies to determine how the children died and the results will be made public when a death certificate is issued.

He said of the family, “I can’t understand the pain, the depth of pain they must be feeling.

“This is an unimaginable, senseless tragedy, the investigation continues.”

Cruz warned, “No one is here to speculate,” adding that “we are well aware that anyone charged with a felony is presumed innocent until proven beyond a reasonable doubt.”

The Wareham Fire Department showed their love for the Clancy family, the three dead young children and their fellow first responders by adding flowers and stuffed toys to the memorial.

Clancy previously shared online that she is struggling with postpartum anxiety.

While Lindsey seemed like a proud mother on Facebook, she opened up about dealing with postpartum anxiety after the birth of her last child.

Last July, she wrote that six weeks after giving birth, she felt “set” and eager to focus on exercise, nutrition and her mindset, which she said “made all the difference.”

In 2020, she wrote online, “Incredibly grateful for this family and life,” along with adoring images of her children.

Feelings of depression can be common after childbirth, but in rare cases, they can lead to full-blown postpartum psychosis.

In this extreme form of BPD, the mother may suffer from severe depression and hallucinations that may result in harm to herself, her children, or both.

Lindsey’s hospital said in a statement: “We are shocked and saddened to learn of this unthinkable tragedy. We express our deepest condolences to all those affected by these devastating events.”

Postpartum depression: how struggling young mothers can experience extreme effects, from ‘baby blues’ to psychosis

New mothers can often experience anxiety and depression after having a baby, but these feelings can intensify and progress to postpartum depression (PPD) and psychosis.

The first stage is often referred to as “baby blues”, which usually lasts from a few days to two weeks after the baby is born.

These blues usually cause mild mood swings, anxiety, sadness, irritability, crying, appetite problems, and trouble sleeping.

If these feelings persist, the blues may be diagnosed as BPD, which is associated with the chemical, social, and psychological changes that occur after the birth of a child, and can be treated with medication and counseling.

Symptoms of PPD include: extreme mood swings, insomnia, feelings of hopelessness, severe anxiety and panic attacks, and thoughts of hurting yourself or your baby.

PPD can affect up to 1 in 10 mothers, but if left untreated, the condition can worsen and develop into postpartum psychosis.

This serious mental illness often occurs within the first three months after a baby is born and affects about one in 1,000 new mothers.

In postpartum psychosis, women may experience hallucinations, delusions, insomnia, and paranoia.

In its most extreme form, women with postpartum psychosis may attempt to harm themselves, their children, or both.

PPD progresses differently depending on the types of symptoms and severity.

These conditions are usually treated with anti-anxiety or antidepressant medications, psychotherapy, and participation in emotional support groups.
