Moment of hammer attack on Paul Pelosi shown in newly released police bodycam video | US News

A body camera video has been released showing the moment a man attacked Nancy Pelosi’s husband with a hammer at his San Francisco home.
Officers approach the front door and knock several times: as it opens, Mr. Pelosi is holding the head of a hammer, and the intruder is squeezing the handle and trying to rip off the 82-year-old man’s hand.
Mr. Pelosi refuses to let go before the suspect, David DePape, suddenly seizes control and charges at him with a weapon.
It was at this point that Sky News decided to stop filming.
The police run in, jump on the assailant and push him face down to the ground, with Mr. Pelosi lying motionless next to him.
As a result of the October 28 attack, Mr. Pelosi lost consciousness and he underwent surgery to repair a skull fracture and severe injuries to his right arm and hands.
Former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Nancy Pelosione of the most senior US politicians, was the intended target, but was in Washington at the time.
Earlier this week, she said she wasn’t sure if she would watch the video.
“I don’t even know if I will see it,” she said. “I mean, it would be very hard to see an attack on my husband’s life, but I don’t know.”
The video is part of evidence recently released after journalists challenged the decision to keep it from public viewing.
It also includes part of Mr. Pelosi’s 911 call, images from police surveillance cameras, and video of DePape’s police interrogation.
Video footage shows the suspect using a hammer to smash the glass of a door to enter the house.
DePape, 42, denies all the allegations against him. These include attempted kidnappings, attempted murder, elder abuse, and burglaries.
Police said he told them that Washington was “evil” and that he planned to take Mrs. Pelosi hostage for allegedly lying to the public.
He also believed the discredited theory that the US elections were stolen from Donald Trump.
Court documents also show that he told officers he was on a “suicidal mission” while in an interview with DePape named Tom Hanks as, among others, he wanted to target.
Immigration officials said he is a Canadian citizen who was in the US illegally after entering as a visitor.
