Murderer ‘tracked down doppelgänger to fake her own death’ | World

The riddle seems to have stepped out of the pages of a thriller: the body of a young woman, riddled with more than 50 stab wounds, lies in the back seat of a Mercedes registered to a stranger who looks eerily like her.

Of all the theories that have surfaced since the gruesome discovery in the German city of Ingolstadt last summer, the police have settled on perhaps the most bizarre.

The murder, they believe, was an elaborate ploy by a woman who tracked down her doppelgänger via Instagram and then killed her in an attempt to fake her own death and escape from relatives.

“This was an extraordinary case that required all the skills of the investigators,” said Andreas Aichele, a spokesman for local law enforcement agencies.
