Five Memphis officers have been fired after violating multiple departmental rules in connection with the death of Tyre Nichols as criminal and civil rights investigations are launched. Gustav Kilander reports

His mother, Rowan Wells, told CNN that she received a call from a doctor at St. Francis Hospital at 4 a.m. on the day of his death to say that her son was failing organs and to come to the hospital immediately.

“He said, ‘Why aren’t you here?’ And I said, “The cops said I can’t come because he’s under arrest,” Wells told the network. “The doctor told me that my son’s heart had stopped and his kidneys were failing.”

The death of a young man caused deep pain to the Nichols family and caused a citywide scandal.

The reasons for the traffic stop that led to the violent arrest and death of a 29-year-old black man have been controversial, writes Josh Markus:

Tyre Nichols’ parents will reportedly attend Joe Biden’s State of the Union address next week.

After accepting an invitation from the Congressional Black Caucus, Nichols’ mother and father, RowVon Wells and Rodney Wells, will take part in the President’s address.

Caucus chairman Stephen Horsford said he spoke to Nichols’ parents “to give them our condolences first, let them know we support them and ask them what they want from us at this moment.”

The first part of the hour-long video showed officers stopping a young man, forcing him out of the car and onto the floor.

One of them can be heard saying, “Bitch, get your hands behind your back before I break them.” The officer then threatens Nichols that “I’ll kick your ass”.

The 29-year-old father died in hospital a few days after he was detained by police during a traffic stop.

Now, five officers from the Memphis Police Department have been removed from their posts and imprisoned on charges of second-degree murder.

The MPD announced that the specialist team involved in the arrest would be “permanently deactivated”.

Video of a 29-year-old man being fatally beaten by police officers was released by the city of Memphis on Friday night.

The Memphis Police Department disbanded the Scorpion Unit after the video of the beating was released.

President Joe Biden called a video showing Tyre Nichols being beaten by Memphis police officers “horrific” and said it was a “painful reminder” of the fear that black and brown Americans regularly face when calling for peaceful demonstrations.

“Like many others, I was outraged and deeply saddened to see the horrific video of the beating that killed Tyre Nichols,” the president said in a statement. “This is yet another painful reminder of the deep fear and trauma, pain and exhaustion that black and brown Americans experience every single day.”

On Friday night, Memphis police released a video of five former department officers beating Nichols, who died three days later. The police chief warned that the video showed a violation of “fundamental human rights”.
