Tyre Nichols updates: Memphis fire staff fired and 6th officer ousted after horror dashcam video released

Protesters march in Memphis after the release of a video of Tyre Nichols being beaten by police.

The Memphis Police Department announced that a sixth officer, Preston Hemphill, has been placed on administrative leave in connection with the beating of Tyre Nichols, as well as two members of the city’s fire department.

Mr. Hemphill’s lawyer, Lee Gerald, confirmed to reporters that his client was the third officer at Nichols’ first stop.

“In accordance with departmental guidelines, Officer Hemphill activated the body camera,” Gerald said in a statement. “He never attended the second stage. He is cooperating with officials in this investigation.”

An ambulance and an ambulance driver who responded to Tyre Nichols after he was beaten by police were also fired, according to the Memphis Fire Department.

EMT-Basic employees Robert Long, EMT-Advanced JaMichael Sandridge and driver Lieutenant Michelle Whitaker have all been fired, department chief Gina Sweet said.

Mr. Nichols’ parents, Rowan Wells and Rodney Wells, accepted an invitation from the Congressional Black Caucus to attend Joe Biden’s State of the Union address next week.

Caucus chairman Stephen Horsford said he spoke to Nichols’ parents “to give them our condolences first, let them know we support them and ask them what they want from us at this moment.”

Mr. Horsford said he hoped to arrange a meeting between the president and the Nichols family as well.

Nichols, 29, was pulled over for a traffic stop in Memphis on Jan. 7. Three days later he died in the hospital.

Five officers – Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr. and Justin Smith – were fired by the Memphis Police Department and charged with murder.

On Friday, footage of the fateful meeting was finally released, showing Nichols being beaten with fists, kicks and clubs.

However, the footage leaves some questions unanswered, including why officers stopped traffic on Nichols’ car in the first place.
