UK Tumbles in Corruption Index After a Year of Political Scandal

The UK has slipped in the global corruption rankings, with watchdog Transparency International describing public confidence as “alarmingly low” following a spate of political and public spending scandals. The group also noted the lack of progress in Russia, Brazil and Qatar.
The UK slipped seven places to 18th out of 180 countries and territories in the 2022 Corruption Perceptions Index, the biggest drop among the G7 countries on this year’s list. Among the sharpest droprs was Qatar, which faced European allegations of bribery and complaints about poor working conditions for the hosts of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. It dropped nine places to number 40.
