Western Australians warned over radioactive capsule lost on highway | World

A tiny radioactive capsule lost somewhere along an 870-mile stretch of road in Western Australia prompted government officials to issue an urgent public health warning.

The Western Australian government said the object, which is 8mm high and 6mm wide, could fit comfortably inside a penny coin, which could “cause serious health effects.”

Andrew Robertson, Chief Medical Officer of Western Australia, urged members of the public not to touch or handle the capsule, which contains radioactive material used by the mining industry.

“Exposure to this substance can cause radiation burns or serious illness – if people see a capsule or something like that, stay away from it and keep others away from it,” he said.
